Common materials and application scope of O-rings

The shadow of O-ring can be found everywhere in our lives, such as household appliances, daily products, automobiles, machine tools and mechanical equipment, etc. Despite its small size, its use and function are significant. Do you know what materials are used to produce it? What is its scope of application? If you want to have a deeper understanding of it, why not follow us to learn.
  Common materials
The currently common materials include natural rubber (NR), butyl rubber (BU), fluororubber (FKM), nitrile rubber (NBR), acrylic rubber (ACM), ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), chloroprene rubber (CR), silicone (SI), etc. Seals made of different materials are used in different places.
  The advantages are as follows:
  1. The structure of the sealing part is relatively simple, and the installation part is compact and lightweight after installation.
  2. It has a self sealing function, and in ordinary situations, only one sealing element is needed to achieve a good sealing effect.
  3. The sealing performance is good. When it is used as a fixed seal, there is basically no leakage problem. When it is used as a moving seal, only slight leakage occurs during high-speed movement.
  4. The frictional resistance of movement is relatively small, and it can even adapt to situations with alternating pressure.
  5. The dimensions and grooves in the industry have been standardized for production, making them highly replaceable. In addition, the cost is relatively low, making them easy to use.
Common materials and application scope of O-rings
  The disadvantages are as follows:
Compared with other seals, it also has its drawbacks.
  1. When starting, there is relatively high frictional resistance.
  2. When used for sealing in pneumatic devices, in order to ensure the sealing effect and reduce the probability of wear, lubricating oil needs to be added, which is quite troublesome.
  3. For coupling accessories, such as moving surfaces, groove gaps, etc., the precision and size requirements for processing are very strict, which increases the difficulty of processing.
  4. In some harsh environments, the material requirements are relatively high, and ordinary ones are not suitable, often requiring special customization.
  Applicable scope
O-ring is widely used in various mechanical equipment, and can play a static and dynamic sealing role in pressure, temperature, humidity, and different liquid and gas media that meet the specified requirements.
We can find that it is not only used in our daily lives, such as in many household appliances that require sealing, but also plays an irreplaceable role in industrial production. It is widely used in metallurgical machinery, chemical machinery, construction machinery, petroleum machinery, agricultural machinery, instruments and meters, ships and automobiles.
This sealing ring is mainly used for static sealing and reciprocating sealing. When it is in a static sealing state, the sealing effect is relatively good and there is basically no leakage. When it rotates to seal, it can only be used under low-speed rotating sealing device conditions.
O-ring is generally installed on the outer or inner circle, with a circular groove section. It has strong performance and can still provide good sealing and shock absorption even in environments such as oil, alkali, acid, chemical erosion, and wear. Therefore, it is a widely used sealing component in hydraulic and pneumatic transmission systems.
The initial compression energy of the O-ring during installation, whether in the radial or axial direction, endows it with its own initial sealing ability, and the sealing force generated due to system pressure will increase with the increase of system pressure, resulting in an enhanced sealing effect.
